Look, if you’re the kind of person who needs a fast-paced thriller to keep you from checking your phone, Trois balles dans la peau is probably going to make you sleepy. But if you dig that old-fashioned French mystery vibe where everyone smokes in every room and the lighting is always a bit moody? Yeah, you’ll probably get a kick out of it.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s definitely not While the City Sleeps in terms of grit. But it’s got this weird, dusty charm that keeps you watching even when the plot starts getting a little too tangled for its own good.
The whole thing kicks off with a dead painter in a penthouse. Three bullets. A girl on the floor holding the gun. It’s such a classic setup it almost hurts. You just know the detective is going to have to spend the next hour walking in circles until the real killer reveals themselves by being slightly too nervous.
The performances are... well, they are very of the time. Lots of dramatic gesturing and wide-eyed staring. At one point, I couldn't tell if the detective was actually looking for clues or just trying to remember where he left his hat. It’s got that specific rhythm, you know? Like a stage play that someone decided to film on a Tuesday afternoon.
It reminds me a bit of the pacing issues I had with Beyond the Crossroads. Sometimes these movies just stop dead in their tracks so someone can deliver a line that doesn't actually advance the story. But hey, that's part of the fun, right? You’re not here for efficiency.
Don't overthink it. It's a bit clunky and the mystery isn't exactly Sherlock Holmes level stuff, but it feels human. It feels like people made a movie because they liked the idea of a mystery, not because they were trying to win an award or start a franchise. Just turn the lights down and don't expect too much logic in the final act. Sometimes, it’s nice just to watch a movie that isn't trying to be the most important thing you’ve ever seen. 🕵️♂️
