6.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Impatient Maiden remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, The Impatient Maiden is one of those movies that you either settle into on a rainy Tuesday or you turn off after fifteen minutes. It’s not for the people who need a tight, punchy script. It’s for the folks who like seeing actors from the 30s just kind of exist in a room together.
It’s not a masterpiece, and honestly, it’s a bit clunky in places. If you’re looking for a smooth ride, you’ll probably hate it. But if you’ve got a soft spot for movies where the characters spend half their time talking themselves into a corner, you might get a kick out of it.
Mae Clarke is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. She has this way of looking at the camera that makes you think she knows the script is a bit of a mess too. It’s charming, in a weirdly desperate sort of way.
Seeing Walter Brennan pop up in these older flicks is always a trip. He’s got that voice, you know? It’s like he was born to play the guy standing in the corner of a room, watching the drama unfold with a slight smirk. He’s not doing much here, but he’s there. That’s enough.
There’s a scene about midway through that goes on for way too long. The characters are just… sitting there. It’s like the director told them to keep talking until the lights went out. It feels kind of like People on Sunday if someone stripped away all the cool experimental energy and replaced it with a radio play.
It’s not as interesting as something like Prunella, which has this weird, floaty quality I really dig. This movie is much more grounded. Maybe a little too grounded. It feels like a stage play that was pushed out into the sunlight before it was ready to face the world.
You can tell the movie really wants you to care about the romance. It tries so hard. It’s almost sweet. But then it hits a wall and just starts spinning its wheels. Still, for what it is, it’s fine. It’s not going to change your life, but it won’t waste your afternoon either. Just don't expect it to stick in your brain for more than a day. 🎞️
