7/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Whirlpool remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a high tolerance for 1930s melodrama and don't mind when a movie takes twenty minutes to say something that could have been handled in two, you might actually get a kick out of Whirlpool. It is not for the person who needs a fast-moving plot or a hero they can root for. If you just want to watch people suffer in elegant rooms while staring longingly out of windows, settle in.
The whole thing hinges on a tragedy right at the start. Henry gets paralyzed on his honeymoon, and the air just leaves the room. From there, it is all about Jeanne trying to act like a saint while clearly wishing she was literally anywhere else. It’s heavy, man.
There is this one scene where Jeanne is just sitting there, smoothing out a tablecloth, and you can see the exhaustion in her face. It is not a big 'acting' moment with tears or shouting. She is just tired of the silence. Honestly, I found that way more compelling than the big dramatic arguments that come later.
The movie does this thing where it leans *way* too hard into the husband’s disability. Every time Henry is on screen, the camera treats him like a piece of furniture that talks. It feels a bit cold, honestly. Maybe that is the point, but it made me want to go watch Outcast Lady just to remember what actual chemistry looked like on screen back then.
Then the athlete shows up. Of course he does. He is handsome, he is healthy, and he is everything Henry isn't anymore. The way the movie handles this attraction is almost painful. It is all glances and pauses that go on for an eternity. Sometimes it feels like they forgot to yell 'cut' and the actors were just waiting for someone to give them a line.
It is not exactly a masterpiece, and it definitely isn't as punchy as A Scandal in Bohemia, but there is a strange, dusty honesty to it. It is a movie that smells like old perfume and regret. Don't go in expecting a thrill ride. Go in expecting to feel a little bit uncomfortable.
