Biography
A brassy Brooklyn breeze named Alice Howell blew into the world on 5 May 1888, right in the heart of New York City. Before long she was trading punchlines for a living, lighting up silent reels in Cinderella Cinders (1920) and Lunatics in Politics (1920), then swaggering through The Pride of the Force (1925) with comic nerve to spare. Off-screen she collected surnames the way other people collect postcards, marrying first Richard Smith and later Benjamin Vincent Shevlin. The final curtain fell on 12 April 1961 in Los Angeles, California, but the laughter she printed on celluloid keeps looping, bright and indefatigable.
