Biography
A spring baby—13 April 1868—Antal Nyáray first drew breath in Nagyenyed, a Hungarian market town now mapped as Aiud, Romania. Footlights soon lured him from Transylvanian classrooms to the capital’s stages, where he shaped laughter and heartbreak in equal measure. Silent-film cameras caught up with him in middle age: he mined comedy in *Az aranyásó* (1914), chased bohemian ghosts through *Az utolsó bohém* (1913), and toyed with the uncanny in *Mágia* (1917). Off-screen, he shared his life with actress-writer Anna Bíró, his partner in art and in marriage. Nyáray’s final curtain fell in Budapest on 27 February 1920, leaving behind flickering images and a reputation that outlived the flicker.
