Biography
A crisp November morning in 1881 Wandsworth brought Arthur Chesney into the world, and London would never quite shake him. Over the next six decades he slipped between grease-paint and ink, acting in and scripting stories that flickered across the silver sheet: the Lancashire lass who dared in *Fanny Hawthorne* (1927), the battle-scarred father of *Sorrell and Son* (1933), and the swindler-cavalier of *Colonel Blood* (1934). Off-screen he shared his life with fellow player Estelle Winwood, their marriage a private drama behind the public performances. The city that first cradled him reclaimed him on 27 August 1949, closing the curtain on a Londoner who had spent a lifetime imagining other worlds while never really leaving his own.
