Biography
Born beneath the wide Indiana sky on 1 August 1874, Augustus Phillips grew up in Rensselaer before trading small-town quiet for the flickering frontier of early cinema. Within a decade he slipped into costume and legend: first galloping through history in The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere (1914), then saluting the flag he helped make mythic in The Birth of the Star Spangled Banner that same year, and finally exploring Eden’s fragile gates in 1916. Off-screen, he claimed Mildred Manning as his lifelong scene partner. The curtain fell on 16 September 1952 in Milford, Pennsylvania, closing a life that had first lit up when movies themselves were still learning to speak.
