Biography
Bess Sankey’s story opened on 3 February 1905 in the red-dust swirl of Oklahoma. Before she could spell “celluloid,” the camera had already claimed her, debuting in the one-reel western At the Lariat's End (1913). Two years later she slipped into the mountaineer melodrama Blue Grass (1915), and by 1916 she was steering Human Cargoes through its gritty port-to-port drama. After the klieg lights dimmed, she stepped quietly out of frame, living away from the lens until her final curtain fell on 10 August 1970 in Stanislaus County, California.
