Biography
Hoboken, New Jersey, greeted Bessie Barriscale on 30 September 1884, and she wasted no time turning footlights into fireworks. By 1914 she was galloping across the screen as the fierce heroine of Rose of the Rancho, following it with the tormented drama of The Painted Soul (1915) and the intimate power of Home (1916). Behind the camera she doubled as a shrewd producer, steering her own projects while sharing both life and film sets with husband Howard Hickman. Six decades after her first close-up, the curtain came down on 30 June 1965 in Kentfield, California, leaving behind a legacy etched in silent-celluloid lightning.
