Biography
Billy Gilbert arrived in the world on 15 September 1891, back when Hollywood was still a sun-baked hamlet rather than a synonym for glamour. By the 1910s he had stepped behind and in front of the camera, steering silent one-reelers like The Tip (1918) and Rob 'Em Good (1923) toward brisk, knockabout laughs, then slipping into the frame himself for the frontier farce Comrades (1928). Off-screen he shared his life with actress Norma Felicia. Six decades after his birth, on 29 April 1961, the lights dimmed for the last time in Los Angeles, the city that had grown up alongside him.
