Biography
Toronto welcomed Charles Arling on 22 August 1880, and by 1915 the city’s booming film scene had lured him in front of the camera. He turned heads as the conniving lead in Droppington’s Devilish Deed, then traded villainy for frost-bitten adventure in Back to God’s Country (1919), one of the era’s most ambitious arctic epics. A quick leap from sled-dogs to baseball diamonds followed: in Number 99 (1920) he patrolled the infield and stole scenes in equal measure. The move that sealed his fate was geographical rather than cinematic: relocating to Los Angeles, he succumbed to illness there on 21 April 1922, leaving behind a compact but indelible reel of silent-era memories.
