Biography

Born in Connecticut in 1860, Charles S. Abbe spent three decades conquering Broadway before the camera ever rolled. From 1895 on, he ruled the boards as the velvet-voiced patriarch every drawing-room comedy needed—silver-haired, sharp-witted, forever the sly socialite father audiences loved to adore. When the movies beckoned, the fifty-five-year-old veteran crossed into flickering light in 1915, trading footlights for kliegs at Famous Players and World Film, headlining a pair of prestige dramas that proved his charisma survived the close-up. The studios took notice; Paramount signed him for the long haul. Throughout the Jazz Age he graced scores of features as the dependable rock upon which leading men leaned, the wry banker, the stern judge, the forgiving dad. His final bow came in 1929 with *The Bishop’s Candlesticks*, closing a career that had glided from gaslit stages to the dawn of sound.
