
Summary
Tom Redding's life is turned upside down when his wealthy father passes away, leaving him with a staggering amount of debt and a plethora of fair-weather friends who swiftly abandon him. The only constant in his life is the unwavering support of Mary Austin, a young woman who stands by him through thick and thin. Determined to escape the suffocating grip of debt, Tom sets his sights on the western frontier, where he ultimately strikes it rich with a lucrative oil well. Now flush with wealth, Tom devises a plan to exact revenge on his former acquaintances by returning to his hometown, feigning poverty, and secretly buying up large swaths of property through a proxy, thereby gaining the upper hand in a game of financial one-upmanship.
Synopsis
When Tom Redding's wealthy father dies and it turns out that all he left Tom was a mountain of debts, all of his "friends" desert him--except young Mary Austin. Determined to get out from all his debt, Tom heads west and eventually strikes it rich with an oil well. Now wealthy, he hatches a plan to get even with his "friends" in his hometown--by pretending to return home broke but having a colleague secretly buy up as much property in town as he can.
