Biography
London, 1890: the curtain rose on Cyril Mackay. By twenty-two he was chasing illusions of cursed pearls in front of a hand-cranked camera for The Mystery of the Black Pearl (1912). Five years later he stalked through the plague-shadowed sets of Remorse, a Story of the Red Plague (1917), trading gaslight for lantern light. Then came the open ranges of 1920, when he rode into Australian legend as one of the rugged horsemen of The Man from Snowy River. The final reel stopped turning in July 1923, the sunlit banks of Brisbane’s river standing in for a London stage far away.
