Biography

Born in the frost-bitten last days of 1894 on the Nebraska plains, Doris Pawn traded small-town quiet for the flicker of silent-film lights. By 1920 she was tangling with Lon Chaney’s twisted crime boss in The Penalty and chasing slapstick mystery through What Happened to Rosa, then sparking comedy again in 1922’s Putting It Over. Off-screen, her heart made three trips down the aisle—first with Samuel William Dunaway, later with Paul Reiners, and finally with director Rex Ingram. More than six decades after her film debut, she took her final bow on 30 March 1988, ocean waves replacing klieg lights outside her La Jolla, California home.
