Biography
Copenhagen greeted Emil Skjerne on 25 July 1881, and by his thirtieth birthday he had already stepped in front of – and behind – the flickering hand-cranked cameras of Nordisk Film. Audiences first noticed the quick-smiled Dane in the mountaineering melodrama *Alperosen* (1911); a year later he guided actors through the class-barbed comedy *En Mesalliance* (1912) from the director’s chair, then traded top-hat for tramp’s coat to play both sides of the social divide in *Fattig og rig* (1915). Consumption stilled that restless talent on 22 May 1921, leaving only the whirring shadows to speak for him.
