Biography
Ramsgate, 1853: the seaside air greeted a restless red-head who would trade Kent’s salt winds for the hiss of carbon-arc lamps. Eva Bayley stepped before the camera while the medium itself was still learning to focus, lending her sharp, mirth-lined features to Grandma Threading Her Needle and The Old Maid’s Valentine, both stitched in 1900 when “feature” meant one reel and a close-up could still startle. Fourteen years later she re-emerged as a player in Loves and Adventures in the Life of Shakespeare, proving her staying power as narrative film lengthened and ambitions swelled. She exited the stage for good in 1934, slipping away quietly in Brighton, the Channel once again at her doorstep.
