Biography
Born in the bustle of Berlin on 8 April 1876, Franz Ludwig grew into the kind of screen presence that history seems to summon rather than cast. Between 1914 and 1927 he stepped—twice—into the iron-willed boots of Otto von Bismarck, lending the same face to three separate epics that charted the chancellor’s rise and reign. On 16 November 1927, while the cameras had long stopped rolling, the story closed quietly for Ludwig in the spa town of Bad Neuenahr, Germany.
