Biography
London welcomed Fred Groves on 8 August 1880, and the city’s East-End bustle became the backdrop to a life spent in front of the camera. Between 1915 and 1921 he slipped into three enduring silent dramas—The Firm of Girdlestone, the temperance parable Drink, and Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge—each time lending a new face to the flickering screen. Seventy-four years after his first breath, London drew the curtain on 4 June 1955, the same streets that had watched him grow now bidding him goodbye.
