Biography
A bay-area baby at the start of 1878, Fred Starr grew up with San Francisco’s fog in his lungs and greasepaint in his blood. By the Roaring Twenties he had traded the city’s hills for flickering klieg lights, stampeding across the screen in *Riders of the Dawn* (1920), tangling with wilderness and rivals in *Man of the Forest* (1921), and risking neck and limb in the cliff-hanging serial *Daredevil Jack* (1920). Barely three years into his Hollywood adventure, the curtain fell: Starr died in Los Angeles on 20 August 1921, taking with him the promise of a career just catching its stride.
