Biography
Before the talkies roared to life, Gabriel Moreau stalked the silent sets of Europe, lensing three short shocks of celluloid that still echo a century later. In 1914 he mounted The Life of Our Saviour; or, The Passion Play, a reverent epic that marched its actors through biblical Jerusalem under the Italian sun. A year later he traded sanctity for sultry exoticism with Nudo di zingara, capturing the smolder of a Roma dancer in stark, monochrome close-ups. After a wartime pause, he returned in 1920 with Martirio, tightening the frame on agony and ecstasy in a single, claustrophobic reel. Then, as suddenly as he appeared, Moreau stepped out of the projector’s beam—his name flickering only in footnotes, his films forever looping in archives and dreams.
