Biography
Placerville, California, greeted George Hernandez on 6 June 1863, and by the early 1910s the former Sierra-foothills boy had become a familiar silhouette on nickelodeon screens. Between 1911 and 1920 he slipped into dozens of characters—most memorably the wily healer of The White Medicine Man, the scheming rival in Making a Man of Him, and the flustered alumnus of Just Out of College. Off-camera he shared his life with actress Anna Dodge, his partner in marriage until the final curtain. Los Angeles, the city that had become his professional home, recorded his last breath on 31 December 1922, closing a career that helped stitch together the first decade of American cinema.
