Biography
Budapest, 28 July 1889: the city’s gas-lamps were still flickering when Géza Örvössy drew his first breath. By his mid-twenties he had stepped before the flickering cameras of a newborn cinema, lending quiet magnetism to A dollárkirálynö leánya (1913), Bánk bán (1915) and Zoárd mester (1917), films that survive today like ghosts on nitrate. Off-screen he found steadier company in actress Ilona Benes; the two made a lifelong duet of their vows. On 12 May 1943, in Kolozsvár—now Cluj, but forever Hungarian in his passport—Örvössy took his final bow, leaving the stage while the reels of his performances kept turning in the dark.
