Biography
A December Tuesday in 1885 brought Grete Wiesenthal to Vienna, then still the cosmopolitan heart of Austria-Hungary; eighty-four years and a world war later, she returned to the city’s soil on 22 June 1970. Between those two Viennese dates she stepped before cameras at the dawn of Austrian cinema, animating silent shadows in The Girl from Abroad; or, The Great Underworld (1913), slipping through the exotic melodrama of Kadra Sâfa (1914), and embodying the fevered imagination of Der Traum des Künstlers (1919).
