Biography
Born in the waning weeks of summer 1890, Gunnar Sommerfeldt stepped onto the Scandinavian silent scene as both leading man and visionary behind the lens. Audiences first warmed to him in the bittersweet breeze of *En Lykkeper* (1918), then followed his gaze across the sweeping fields of *Markens grøde* and the fateful footwear of *Lykkens galoscher*, both released in the prolific year of 1921. Forty-six autumns after his September debut, he quietly exited the stage on 30 August 1947, leaving the reels to keep his memory flickering.
