Harry Jay Smith flickered across the silent screen just as the medium was discovering its voice: he donned Roman armor for The Sign of the Cross in 1914, traded it for Regency waistcoats in 1915’s Vanity Fair, and then flirted with a crown in 1916’s Nearly a King.
