Biography
Born in Worcester on a winter’s day, 6 December 1862, Harry Lonsdale swapped the soot-streaked streets of Victorian England for the klieg-lit frontier of silent cinema. Between 1913 and 1916 he stalked three very different worlds—medieval Yorkshire in Rebecca the Jewess, the tropics of The Ne’er Do Well, and the desert mirages of The Garden of Allah—leaving flickering proof of a talent calibrated for the new art of moving pictures. Off-screen he shared his life with fellow player Alice Lonnon Perkins, the actress who answered his curtain calls at home. The final reel rolled in Los Angeles on 8 February 1939, closing a life that had journeyed from English gaslight to California sunshine.
