Biography

Weston-Super-Mare’s salty breezes greeted Henry Edwards on 18 September 1882, and by his teens he had already swapped the Somerset shoreline for the footlights. In front of the camera he convinced audiences he was a lovesick Welsh crooner in A Welsh Singer (1915), a tight-fisted Christmas miser in Scrooge (1935), and a restless millionaire chasing happiness in The Amazing Quest of Mr. Ernest Bliss (1920). Behind it, he called the shots as director, coaxing performances as deftly as he gave them. Off-set, his leading lady was Chrissie White—his wife and frequent collaborator—who shared both his marquee and his life. The final curtain fell on 2 November 1952 in the quiet Surrey village of Chobham, but the flickering images he crafted still wander the screen, keeping Edwards forever in motion.
