Biography
Henry Kotani entered the world on 25 April 1887 on the island of Nihojima, in what is now central Hiroshima. Behind the camera he spun light and shadow for three classics of early Japanese cinema—Gubijinsô (1921), Toranku (1921) and Koi no misshi (1924)—and occasionally stepped in front of the lens as director. Fukiko Hori shared his life as his wife. His final curtain fell in Tokyo on 8 April 1972.
