December 1868 found Henry West welcomed by the clang of Manhattan streetcars and gas-lit marquees; the city’s restless pulse became the heartbeat of his future craft. By 1915 he had stepped before the camera as the doomed foreign secretary in *The Dictator*, trading stage boards for celluloid and proving that a granite jawline could speak louder than dialogue.
