Biography
Born in 1855 amid the gabled brickwork of Stettin—then a Prussian river port, now the Polish city of Szczecin—Hubert Wilke traded the Baltic fog for the klieg lights of early cinema. Between 1915 and 1926 he slipped into three very different skins: a wandering waif’s protector in *The Fairy and the Waif*, a battle-scarred drifter in *The Strong Way*, and a silver-tongued charlatan in *The Great Deception*. Off-screen he shared his life with actress Frieda Stettmeyer; together they crossed the Atlantic and settled in Yonkers, New York, where Wilke’s story closed on 22 October 1940.
