Biography

Before the Revolution cracked the Russian Empire in half, a restless camera-eye named Ilya Orlov slipped into cinema’s nursery and filmed the country’s first espionage serial, *Tayna Lozhi Liter A*, in 1915—its celluloid letters smuggled from Petrograd balconies onto flickering screens. One year later, with the world already burning, he chased shadows through *V Lapah Zheltava Dyavola*, a fever dream of propaganda and puppeteers set in a St. Petersburg that no longer exists. Twenty-three years after that first reel, when Soviet tanks rumbled across newsreels and history books, Orlov climbed back behind the lens to give the Red Army armor its close-up in *Red Tanks* (1939), proving that even in Stalin’s glare, a silent-era survivor could still make metal roar.
