Biography
Leap-day baby J. Edwin Brown first drew breath in Boston on 29 February 1856, a calendar rarity that hinted at the uncommon path he would follow. Over the next seven decades he slipped into dozens of skins on stage and, later, before the flickering new lens of cinema—memorable turns in the sci-fi puzzle The Black Box (1915), the Jazz-Age romp Jenny Be Good (1920), and the racially charged whodunit The Gunsaulus Mystery (1921). The curtain finally rang down in Los Angeles on 6 January 1933, closing the life of a performer who had helped shepherd acting from gaslight into the age of celluloid.
