Summary
When the aristocratic Count de Vaux cold‑bloodedly slays his dearest companion, the shock reverberates through the corridors of power and ignites a dormant fury in the young barrister Étienne Duval. Driven by an unquenchable thirst for retribution, Étienne abandons the courtroom for the clandestine taverns of the insurgent underworld, where he dons the mask of Scaremouche, a symbol of defiance against tyranny. The film charts his metamorphosis from genteel advocate to charismatic revolutionary, weaving together courtroom intrigue, duels of wit, and sweeping battlefield choreography. As alliances shift and betrayals multiply, Étienne must navigate a labyrinth of loyalty, love, and political machination, ultimately confronting the paradox that vengeance can both liberate and imprison the soul.
