Biography
A Providence winter greeted James McDuff in 1863, and the Rhode Island capital would always claim first dibs on his story. By the time silent-film cameras began turning, he had already spent decades polishing stagecraft into a low-key magnetism that transferred neatly to the new medium. Audiences first noticed him in 1915’s The Concealed Truth, later felt the chill he brought to Stranger of the North (1924), and wrestled with the moral tug-of-war he embodied in Flesh and Spirit (1922). McDuff’s final curtain fell on 31 March 1937, in Bayshore, Long Island, a coastal town that now keeps a quiet footnote on an otherwise noisy film history.
