Biography

Before television had color, James Reese Europe was already splashing sound across the capital: born in Mobile, Alabama on February 22, 1880, he grew up in Washington, D.C., and by 1903 had talked his way into leading the orchestra at the capital’s most exclusive private events. The syncopated marches he wrote for the 369th U.S. Infantry Regiment’s “Hellfighters” band—formed in 1916—crossed the Atlantic in 1918, making Paris dance long before the Armistice. Europe’s 1919 return home ended tragically on May 9 when a band-mate’s knife cut him down in Boston, yet his baton survives on screen: Ken Burns’ *Jazz* (2001) and the short documentary *DCPS Crushing the Game* (2022) still carry the spark he struck.
