Biography

Born under the smokestacks of Saint-Étienne on 3 April 1882, Jean-José Frappa traded coal-dust air for footlights and ink. Between the first flicker of cinema in 1913—when he stepped before the camera for *Le nabab*—and the twilight of the silent era, he slipped into disguises, wrote feverishly, and persuaded audiences to believe a chessboard could outwit a tyrant in 1927’s *The Chess Player*. Two years later he helped resurrect Joan of Arc in *La merveilleuse vie de Jeanne d’Arc*, letting the maid’s banner ripple across screens worldwide. The curtain fell for good on 14 October 1939 in Paris, but the reels still spin, keeping Frappa’s restless spirit forever in motion.
