A winter baby from the one-stoplight town of Lyons, Michigan—December 3, 1884—Jessie Arnold traded Great-Lakes snow for California sun and spent the next forty-odd years slipping in and out of other people’s skins. In 1912 she helped audiences place their first bets on the silent one-reeler *The Wager*, then ghosted through the eerie plot twists of 1920’s *The Dark Mirror* before finally buckling up for 1949’s *Air Hostess*, proving that propellers and soundstages were no match for her staying power. Los Angeles claimed her back on May 5, 1955, closing the curtain on a career that spanned horses-to-talkies-to-jet-engines without ever dimming her light.
