Enter Nevil Trask, moonlighting as a melancholy portraitist sketching dockworkers in Marseilles; his charcoal eyes disguise a ledger of coded wiretaps and a pistol grip that has already memorized the small of her back. Their collision is choreographed like a tango on a crumbling balcony: she lifts her veil, he lowers his conscience, and the music halts mid-bar while contraband camellias spill across the wet cobblestones.
