Biography
John Charles entered the world in 1885 and spent the next thirty-six years carving a brief but indelible niche on the silent screen. Between 1912 and 1915 he slipped into three very different skins: the steadfast village priest of Sogarth Aroon, the hapless victim of romantic mix-ups in Mates and Mis-Mates, and the boisterous cattle-country politician of A Texas Steer. Each role flickered across nickelodeon projectors while the medium itself was still learning to walk. His own final curtain fell on 7 November 1921 in Whitestone, New York, leaving the fledgling art of cinema to grow without him.
