Biography
Born in Stockholm on 15 November 1880, John Ekman stepped from the city’s winter-lit streets onto the silvered sets of Europe’s earliest cinema. Still in his twenties he directed and starred in Säterjäntan (1912), then slipped into the shadows of Gentleman of the Room (1914) before riding the stormy saga of Victor Sjöström’s The Outlaw and His Wife (1918). Four decades of stage and screen later, Ekman’s final curtain fell in Karlstad on 22 November 1949, leaving the Värmland snow to remember the restless Stockholmer who once taught Nordic silence to speak.
