Biography
Ottawa, 9 September 1893: the city’s autumn light shone on the newborn who would slip into silent-era shadows as John Oaker. Within two dozen years he had traded Ontario’s riverbanks for California camera cradles, stepping before the lens just as Hollywood learned to speak without words. Between 1915 and 1916 he slipped into three now-cult reels: first as part of The Majesty of the Law’s moral chessboard, then doubling up in 1916 with the Joan of Arc spectacle Joan the Woman and the courtroom mystery The Hidden Law. After the projectors cooled, Oaker quietly outlived the silent age by half a century, dying in Los Angeles on 14 January 1969.
