Biography
Chicago greeted Josephine Ditt on 7 September 1868, and by 1912 she was already haunting the flickering arc lights of early Hollywood. In The Unknown Model she first stepped before the hand-cranked camera; two years later she confronted syphilis on-screen in Damaged Goods, and in 1915 she traded barbed quips in The Secretary of Frivolous Affairs. Off-screen, she shared her life—and the dawn of West-Coast filmmaking—with pioneering actor-director Tom Ricketts. Sixty-one years after her first Midwestern cry, Los Angeles closed the curtain on 18 October 1939.
