Biography
Born 7 May 1864 in the market town of Kaposvár when it still answered to Vienna, József Neumann traded the quiet of southwest Hungary for the crackle of nitrate and carbon arcs. Within two years he steered three landmarks onto the nation’s screens: the rallying cry of A Nérfölkelö (1914), the rakish swan song Az utolsó bohém (1913), and the sabre-rattling romance Weisz Pista, a huszár (1913). Producer, director, and one-man studio engine, he kept Hungarian stories flickering through the birth pangs of cinema. He died in Budapest on 8 February 1933, the projectors still warm in his wake.
