Biography
Jules Cowles drew his first breath on 18 October 1877 amid the cider-scented orchards of Farmington, Connecticut. Years later, moviegoers would recognize his craggy face and crinkle-eyed grin in three silent-era touchstones: The Ne’er-Do-Well (1923), The Lost World (1925), and The Scarlet Letter (1926). The final curtain fell for him on 22 May 1943 in Hollywood, California, where the California sun that had lit so many of his shoots set on his last day.
