Biography
Born in the twilight of the Habsburg era—4 March 1866—Vienna’s Julius Steger traded imperial ballrooms for flickering nickelodeons. Between 1917 and 1918 he steered three silent sensations onto the world’s screens: the conscience-wrestling Redemption, the scandal-laced Her Mistake, and the defiant melodrama Just a Woman. Writer, director, and Wiener by birth and choice, Steger lived long enough to watch the medium he helped shape outgrow its cradle; he closed his final reel on 26 February 1959, still in the city that had always powered his lens.
