Biography

A prairie-born whirlwind, June Elvidge entered the world on 30 June 1893 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and by her early twenties had traded icy winters for the klieg-lit dream factory of silent-era New York. Between 1918 and 1922 she stalked across the screen—now a calculating society vamp, now a wounded innocent—in The Power and the Glory, The Moral Deadline, and the sensuous parable Beauty’s Worth. Off-camera she collected surnames the way other people collected postcards: first Canadian exporter Frank Badgley, then stockbroker Roy Zulick Ramsey, finally novelist-journalist Briton Niven Busch. The cameras stopped, the marriages dissolved, and the onetime picture-house temptress slipped into quiet anonymity, dying on 1 May 1965 in Eatontown, New Jersey, miles and decades away from the flickering illusions that once spelled her immortality.
