Born in Kanagawa on 24 January 1885, Kisaburô Kurihara first stepped before the camera, then stepped behind it, shaping Japan’s early screen with a steady hand. Audiences still feel the echo of his performances and direction in Haru wa kaeru (1924), Yume no tabiji (1921), and Amachua kurabu (1920). His story closed in Tokyo on 8 September 1926, but the images he crafted keep flickering.
