Biography
February 5, 1862, Cincinnati’s river chill greeted the newborn L.M. Wells, whose life would later flicker across silent-era screens. Between 1915 and 1920 he slipped into three surviving roles—the political sting of Graft, the river-raft charm of Huckleberry Finn, and the crackling mystery of The Voice on the Wire—each performance a ghost of nitrate still whispering today. Off-camera he shared his life with actress Bess Gilbert. Wells’s curtain fell on New Year’s Day, 1923, leaving only those fleeting shadows to speak for him.
