Biography
Rio de Janeiro, 12 September 1893: the city that would one day samba was already humming when Luiz de Barros arrived, eager to bend light into stories. By twenty-three he had hijacked the camera for “Vivo ou Morto,” a 1916 cliff-hanger that taught Brazilian audiences to gasp in unison. Seven years later he draped the screen in moonlit menace with “Cavaleiro Negro,” and in 1931 bathed it in patriotic sunrise for “Alvorada da Glória.” Between cuts he married Gita, his favorite collaborator, and kept splicing dreams in his hometown until the final fade-out in 1982.
